So… what is “reciprocity” exactly?

Fast fashion is one of the leading industries in consumer culture, and it also is one of the leading contributions to the climate crisis. The principle of Reciprocity reminds us what it means to be human and in “relationship” with nature and our fellow neighbors. It helps us to re-imagine what it looks like to re-integrate ourselves back into the ecosystem.

Reciprocity is a powerful cultural force that empowers us to give more than we take and take only what we need. It’s a balance of gratitude for the gifts the earth has given us, and of the relationships we create in order to cooperate on a human level to get the things we need in order to survive…. Its the relationship between people + planet.

Sociologists maintain that all human societies subscribe to the principle that we are obligated to repay favors, gifts, and invitations. It makes sense, really; reciprocity is at the root of what makes us human, and has allowed us to adapt and progress from early primitive tribes to a complex global economy. Let’s get back into that rhythm.

Kat Reynolds founded Reciprocity in 2018 with a refreshingly directional, sustainable, and deeply personal approach to slow fashion.

Kat realized one of the biggest gaps in solving the fast-fashion problem was convenience and accessibility. So she set out to create a resource for people to find whatever they needed and know that the vetting had already been done for them.

Her goal is to get people to move away from consumer culture and shift behavior to buying less, but realized that we have to start somewhere and bridge the gap.

Each brand is carefully curated and features compelling designs with captivating stories behind the garment. With a commitment to sustainability, all pieces are ethically made and responsibly sourced to make your journey as a conscious consumer easier.
